Third Dose of COVID-19 Vaccine
AMA and the CDC have been working very closely together to continue accurately tracking, reporting, and analyzing the administration of COVID-19 vaccinations. It is their belief that data-driven planning and resources allocation is vital for effective immunization programs that will hopefully bring the coronavirus pandemic to an end. Per CPT updates for FY 2022, there are new CPT codes that are effective immediately for use now that a third dose shot of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines have received emergency use authorization for certain patients with compromised immune systems. The vaccine administration CPT code and long descriptor reads as follows:
0003A: Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative free, 30 mcg/0.3 mL dosage, diluent reconstituted; third dose.
0013A: Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative free, 100 mcg/0.5 mL dosage; third dose.
Q: 65-year-old patient with history of HIV presents for their third shot of the Pfizer vaccine.
A: ICD 10 code: Z23, encounter for immunization. CPT code: 91300 and 0003A.
